Start with a city base

Allow roughly four nights for a first base such as Beijing, including arrival. Choose your major visits and leave some ordinary city time between them.

Your travel dates, mobility needs and interests should determine the exact allocation. More nights in fewer places may suit you better than adding another city.

Give the landscape a real stay

Use a middle chapter of around four nights for Guilin and Yangshuo, allowing for the transfer itself. Choose a base and leave room to rearrange outdoor activities.

Before committing, check the actual route between cities. Do not treat a line on a map as evidence of a convenient direct connection.

Finish with an adaptable city chapter

A final Shanghai stay can leave time for neighbourhoods, museums and departure preparation. Keep the final night in a location that makes the onward journey straightforward.

Use any remaining nights as buffer or depth, rather than automatically adding a fourth base. Check entry eligibility for your full route separately.
